Martin defeated Republican nominee John Arthur Gellatly with 57.29% of the vote.Martin was the first Democrat elected governor of Washington with an absolute majority.He was also the first Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Washington to ever win Pacific County and San Juan County and the first since 1892 to win Jefferson County.[a] Primary elections were held on September 13, 1932.
