[1] The Gwangju City Government has a plan to extend the current Line 1 eastward to Hwasun and westward to Naju.After the results of a public hearing conducted in 2019 construction started as originally planned,[3][4] with the first section of the line being scheduled to open in 2023.[5][6][7][8] As of 2024, the opening of the first phase, a 20-station 17 km (11 mi) route to the south of the city, has been pushed back to 2026.[3] The second phase, scheduled to open in 2029, will be 38 km (24 mi) long and will complete the loop.A third phase, 4.8 km (3.0 mi) long, will be a branch that serves the southeastern suburbs of Gwangju.
