Tower Limited, operating as Tower, is a prominent general insurance provider headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand. The company offers a wide range of personal lines and small-and-medium enterprise (SME) insurance products, including car, home, contents, business, boat, pet, and travel coverage across New Zealand and multiple Pacific Island nations.

History and Corporate Evolution

The origins of Tower trace back to 1869 when the New Zealand Government provided capital to establish the Government Life Insurance Department, commonly known as Government Life. For decades, the department operated under government administration and notably used custom postage stamps featuring lighthouse designs starting in 1891 due to a postage cost dispute.

In 1987, as part of a wider trend of corporatisation among New Zealand government entities, Government Life was restructured into Tower Corporation. Three years later, in 1990, the organization underwent mutualisation, transferring ownership directly to its policyholders. To facilitate better capital raising, Tower demutualised in 1999 and listed on both the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and the New Zealand Exchange (NZX). Operations in Australia and New Zealand were subsequently separated in November 2006.

Diversification and Digital Transformation

Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Tower expanded its footprint through strategic acquisitions, such as purchasing the National Insurance Company of New Zealand Limited in 1989, which established its fire and general insurance divisions. In the 2010s, Tower divested its medical, investment, and life insurance divisions to refocus strictly on general insurance lines.

In late 2019, Tower launched its self-service digital platform, My Tower, in New Zealand, later expanding it to Fiji and other Pacific jurisdictions. The company also introduced automated quoting tools like Quick Quote in 2021 to streamline customer onboarding and policy management.

Pacific Islands Operations

Tower operates extensively across the Pacific, providing general insurance services in countries including Fiji, Samoa, American Samoa, the Cook Islands, and Tonga. Its regional hub is based in Suva, Fiji. In 2021, Tower acquired full ownership of National Pacific Insurance Limited and progressively rebranded its operations under the Tower name, marking 150 years of collective operational heritage in the Pacific region by 2024.
