The collection features high-definition remakes of the original Spyro trilogy, which were initially developed by Insomniac Games for the PlayStation: Spyro the Dragon (1998), Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999), and Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000).

Development

Following the success of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, demand for a similar revival of the Spyro series grew significantly. Development was a collaborative effort, with Toys for Bob working closely with the original creators at Insomniac Games to ensure the character's design and personality remained faithful. Because the original source code and assets were unavailable, the developers utilized a custom emulation tool called "Spyro-scope" to analyze level geometry and enemy behavior. The trilogy was built using Unreal Engine 4.

Gameplay

The compilation functions as a 3D platformer where players control Spyro, a young purple dragon, across various realms. The core gameplay remains consistent with the original titles, focusing on exploration, collecting gems, and rescuing dragons or eggs. Toys for Bob introduced modern quality-of-life improvements, including unified control schemes, optional camera controls, and the addition of "skill points" to the first game.

Audio and Voice Acting

The soundtrack was reimagined by Toys for Bob's audio team, with original composer Stewart Copeland returning to create a new main theme. Players are given the option to toggle between the original and the newly arranged soundtracks. Additionally, voice actor Tom Kenny returned to provide the voice for Spyro, re-recording lines for all three games to ensure consistency.

Release and Reception

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 13, 2018, followed by Nintendo Switch and Windows versions on September 3, 2019. The collection was a commercial success, surpassing 10 million units sold by September 2023.
