History of The Cobargo Chronicle

The Cobargo Chronicle was an English-language weekly newspaper published in Cobargo, New South Wales, Australia.

Newspaper History

The Cobargo Chronicle was first published on 18 November 1898 by William Boot in Cobargo, New South Wales. Originally titled The Cobargo Chronicle and South Coast Journal, the publication stated it was devoted to the interests of the dairying, mining, and agricultural industries in the local district. Subscriptions cost one pound per annum, and printing took place on Friday mornings at offices located on Moruya Road.

Proprietor William Boot had previously established another local publication, The Cobargo Watch, on 18 January 1890, which also used the subtitle South Coast Journal. Boot sold The Cobargo Watch to local chemist John Joseph O'Reilly on 4 June 1892. O'Reilly operated the paper until selling it to Albert Edward Walker on 20 October 1894. Walker published The Cobargo Watch until its closure on 21 October 1898.

Following the closure of The Cobargo Watch, Boot returned to the Cobargo district and founded The Cobargo Chronicle.
