Bruno Campanella: Italian Opera Conductor and Bel Canto Specialist

Bruno Campanella (6 May 1943 – 4 August 2026) was an Italian conductor internationally recognized for his interpretations of the Italian opera repertoire, particularly works associated with the bel canto tradition.

Early Life and Education

Campanella was born in Bari, Italy, on 6 May 1943. He pursued his education at the Florence Conservatory, where he studied composition under renowned figures such as Nino Rota and Luigi Dallapiccola. He furthered his training in orchestral conducting with Hans Swarowsky and Thomas Schippers. Outside of musical composition and performance, Campanella completed a thesis focused on Buddhism.

Career and Major Operatic Collaborations

Beginning his professional conducting career in the late 1970s, Campanella gained international acclaim for his expertise in bel canto operas, notably the works of Gioachino Rossini and Gaetano Donizetti.

Throughout his career, Campanella led performances at many of the world's leading opera venues. At the Opéra National de Paris, his repertoire included Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Norma, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri, La Cenerentola, Guillaume Tell, and Il barbiere di Siviglia. His engagements at the Vienna State Opera featured productions such as Donizetti's Linda di Chamounix and Giuseppe Verdi's Jérusalem.

In Italy, he conducted at La Scala in Milan, presiding over works including Nino Rota's Il cappello di paglia di Firenze and Rossini's La Cenerentola. During the 1999–2000 season, Campanella made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, conducting La Cenerentola and Il barbiere di Siviglia. Music critics, including Anthony Tommasini of The New York Times, noted his skill in leading supple and lithe accounts of complex scores. He later returned to the Metropolitan Opera to direct additional productions, including Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri and Bellini's Il pirata.

In London, Campanella led a new production of Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment at the Royal Opera House in January 2007. Reviewers praised his collaborative sympathy and stylistic precision with vocalists. His international guest conducting also extended to the San Francisco Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Liceu in Barcelona, and the New National Theatre Tokyo.

Tenor and Orchestral Leadership in Turin

Campanella held a prominent tenure as principal conductor at the Teatro Regio di Torino from 1992 to 1995, later transitioning to the role of principal guest conductor. Beginning in the mid-1980s and spanning through the 1990s, he conducted a wide variety of operas in Turin, ranging from Rossini and Donizetti comedies to works by Verdi, Benjamin Britten, and Igor Stravinsky.

Honors and Later Life

In recognition of his contributions to musical arts, the French Ministry of Culture named him an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2002.

Campanella passed away following an illness on 4 August 2026, at the age of 83, at Careggi Hospital in Florence, Italy.
