Broad Peak: Geography and Mountaineering History

Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world, reaching an elevation of 8,051 metres (26,414 ft) above sea level. It is one of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders and is situated in the Karakoram mountain range, directly on the border between the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan and the Xinjiang region of China.

Geography

Broad Peak is part of the Gasherbrum massif, located approximately eight kilometres (five miles) from K2. The mountain's name, which was introduced by British explorer Martin Conway in 1892, refers to its summit ridge, which extends for over 1.5 kilometres (7/8 mile). In the local Balti language, the mountain is known as Falchan Kangri.

The mountain features several subsidiary peaks, including the Rocky Summit (8,028 m), Broad Peak Central (8,011 m), Broad Peak North (7,490 m), and Kharut Kangri (6,942 m).

Climbing History

The first successful ascent of Broad Peak occurred on 9 June 1957. The expedition was led by Marcus Schmuck and included team members Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl. The team reached the summit via the West Spur without the use of supplemental oxygen or high-altitude porters.

The first winter ascent of the mountain was achieved on 5 March 2013 by a Polish team consisting of Maciej Berbeka, Adam Bielecki, Tomasz Kowalski, and Artur Małek. The expedition was marked by tragedy, as Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski did not survive the descent.
