The 32nd Police Precinct Station House Complex is a historic former New York City Police Department (NYPD) facility located at 1850–1854 Amsterdam Avenue in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Constructed in the early 1870s, the site served as a precinct station until 1975.

History

The station was built in 1871 or 1872 to serve the 32nd Precinct, which was later redesignated as the 30th Precinct. The site was chosen for its location at the intersection of Amsterdam Avenue and 152nd Street. A stable was originally located on the property, which was later replaced by a garage in 1926. Following the closure of the precinct in 1975, the main building was sold to the St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church, while the garage was separated into different ownership.

Architecture

Designed by the NYPD's in-house architect, Nathaniel D. Bush, the main building is a notable example of the French Second Empire style. The structure features four stories and a basement, characterized by a red-brick facade with sandstone and granite decorative elements. The design includes central pavilions and a mansard roof, which were common features of the style during the period. The interior retains several original 19th-century architectural elements.

Designation and Preservation

The station house complex has received multiple historic designations. It was designated a New York City Landmark on July 15, 1986. Additionally, the complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property within the West Harlem Historic District.
