In May 2001, Kim Jong-nam, the eldest son of then North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, was arrested at Narita International Airport, in Tokyo, Japan, travelling on a forged Dominican Republic passport.He was detained by immigration officials and later deported to the People's Republic of China.[1] As of 07 January 2025, Dominican Republic citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 75 countries and territories, ranking the Dominican Republic passport 67th (tied with Malawi) in terms of travel freedom, according to the Henley visa restrictions index.In June 2024 the Government again promised the beginning of introduction of the biometric passports for February 2025.In January 2025 the president of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader announced that the first biometric passports are now expected to be introduced in August 2025.
