Alberto M. Carvalho MedM (born 1965)[1] is a Portuguese-American educator and the superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District.[6] On December 9, 2021, he accepted the position of Los Angeles Unified School District’s next superintendent following the resignation of Austin Beutner.[11] Carvalho began his career in education as a physics, chemistry, and calculus teacher at Miami Jackson Senior High.[14] Carvalho controversially "franchised" MAST Academy, opening three new schools based on the original Virginia Key institution.[21] Under Carvalho's leadership as superintendent, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools won the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2012.
