Michael Echter: Life and Works of the German Historical Painter

Michael Echter (5 March 1812 – 4 February 1879) was a German painter recognized primarily for his historical and narrative scenes.

Biography

Born in Munich, Echter pursued his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. During his studies, he worked under the guidance of Heinrich Maria von Hess, Clemens von Zimmermann, and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.

Early in his career, Echter assisted Schnorr von Carolsfeld with the interior decorations of the Munich Residenz. In 1847, he traveled to Berlin alongside Wilhelm von Kaulbach to contribute to the decoration of the Neues Museum. Kaulbach's artistic style exerted a significant influence on Echter's subsequent work.

Career and Academic Recognition

Echter achieved formal recognition from his peers and academic institutions in Munich. He was inducted as a member of the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich in 1862. Later, in 1868, he accepted a professorship at the School of Arts and Industry.

Throughout his career, he received various honors and decorations, including the Order of St. Michael and the Order of Leopold.
