The publication was established during a period of significant growth for library services. Originally titled the American Library Journal, it dropped the word "American" after its first year to reflect its broader international scope, as it initially aimed to represent library associations in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Early contributors included influential figures such as R. R. Bowker, Charles Cutter, and Melvil Dewey, who used the platform to disseminate standards for cataloging, indexing, and circulation systems.

Throughout its history, the journal has undergone several ownership changes. It was long associated with the R. R. Bowker company. Following various corporate acquisitions, including ownership by Reed Elsevier, the publication was sold in 2010 to Media Source Inc., which also owns The Horn Book Magazine and the Junior Library Guild.
