Kinrooi

Kinrooi is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg, situated between the towns of Maaseik and Bree. As of January 1, 2006, the municipality recorded a population of 11,978 residents across a total land area of 54.76 square kilometers, resulting in a population density of approximately 219 inhabitants per square kilometer.

History

The modern municipality of Kinrooi was established on September 18, 1971, through the administrative merger of four previously independent municipalities: Kinrooi, Kessenich, Geistingen-Ophoven, and Molenbeersel. Historically, the area of Kinrooi functioned as a hamlet under the jurisdiction of Kessenich. Following the independence of Belgium in 1839, it evolved into a distinct municipality. Archaeological interest in the area was heightened in 2005 when prehistoric remains were discovered during renovation work in the town center.

Economy and Tourism

The local economy is primarily supported by agriculture and the extraction of raw materials, specifically gravel, sand, and loam. While these industrial activities are significant, they have led to changes in the local landscape. In response, the municipality has placed a strong emphasis on tourism. Kinrooi features seven nature reserves that protect diverse plant and animal species, as well as a well-developed marina infrastructure. Notably, one of the former gravel extraction sites in Ophoven has been repurposed into what is considered one of the largest inland harbors in Europe, catering to water sports enthusiasts.
